Giants swept again by Diamondbacks, fall season-low 12 games under .500

SAN FRANCISCO — The Giants received a gift from the Arizona Diamondbacks. They threw it away just as fast.
With one out in the bottom of the eighth, Arizona’s left fielder Ryan Waldschmidt fell flat on his back as he lost a fly ball from Willy Adames in the sun. Adames cruised into second with a double, and San Francisco had the tying run in scoring position.
In a blink, the Giants ended the inning empty-handed. Luis Arraez flipped a single to left field, but Adames was thrown out at the plate on an aggressive send by third base coach Hector Borg. Arraez, who advanced to second on the throw, was then picked off to end the inning.
This brutal sequence epitomized the Giants’ 3-2 loss to the Diamondbacks on Wednesday afternoon at Oracle Park, a defeat that resulted in San Francisco enduring its second sweep to Arizona in the last week. With the loss, the Giants (22-34) are a season-low 12 games under .500.
Right-hander Trevor McDonald delivered a fine outing, allowing three runs (two earned) over 6 1/3 innings with six strikeouts to two walks. With Logan Webb slated to return on Friday, the Giants will soon have to decide whether they keep McDonald or Tyler Mahle in the starting rotation.
Second baseman Arraez gave the Giants a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third, driving in Drew Gilbert and Adames by sneaking a single up the middle despite the Diamondbacks playing with the infield in.
The Giants held that two-run lead until the top of the sixth, when the Diamondbacks plated a pair of runs on an RBI single by Adrian Del Castillo and a sacrifice fly from Ildemaro Vargas.
After tying the game in the sixth, Arizona took a 3-2 lead in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Geraldo Perdomo. McDonald allowed two straight one-out singles before being pulled for left-hander Matt Gage, and Gage allowed the Diamondbacks to load the bases after misplaying a slowly hit grounder by Corbin Carroll.
Perdomo immediately capitalized on the error by driving in a run with a sacrifice fly, giving the Diamondbacks their first lead of the afternoon.
